T20 cricket is characterized by batsmen who slam-bang without regard for their wickets. Teams don’t think about developing partnerships in T20 forms because they only have 20 overs and 10 guys to bat. Partnerships, however, are important even in the shortest format of the game.

229 runs in 96 balls by AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli (2nd wicket)

It goes without saying that Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers are closest friends, and their bond has gone beyond the cricket pitch. The duo owns the record for the top two IPL partnerships. This one, which tops the list, came against a struggling Gujarat Lions offense in 2016. RCB’s batting first lost Chris Gayle early in match 44 of the IPL 2016. Yet they had no idea what was about to come after them. Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers collaborated for the second wicket and completely destroyed Gujarat’s bowling attack.

The pair put up the biggest second-wicket stand in T20 cricket history, scoring 229 runs off just 96 balls. After RCB amassed a mammoth 248/3 in 20 overs, Kohli finished with 109 off 55 balls and de Villers with 129* off 52 balls. Gujarat had no chance. This is the most significant highest partnership in IPL history of all seasons.

Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers ruled the rankings for the highest partnership in IPL before they fashioned a 229-run stand against Gujarat Lions. In the 2015 IPL, these two put on a 215-run stand for the second wicket against the Mumbai Indians. Batting first at Wankhede Stadium, RCB lost Chris Gayle for the second time with only 20 runs on the board. But, Kohli and AB de Villiers ensured that Mumbai did not have another opportunity to celebrate.

The two combined 215 unbroken runs in 105 balls, with de Villiers scoring 133* off 59 balls, including 19 fours and four sixes. Kohli concluded with an 82* off 50 balls. RCB pushed up 235/1 in their 20 overs, and Mumbai had little chance.

206 runs in 96 balls by Adam Gilchrist and Shaun Marsh (2nd wicket)

Adam Gilchrist and Shaun Marsh were scorching the bowlers before the Kohli-AB de Villiers combination. In 2011, the Aussie combination unleashed a ferocious attack on the Royal Challengers Bangalore bowlers. Adam Gilchrist blasted 106 off 55 balls, with 8 fours and 9 sixes, while Marsh hit 79* from 49 balls. As Kings XI Punjab raced to 232/2, the pair contributed 206 runs in 96 balls for the second wicket. Punjab won the match convincingly, as it has done in the other matches on this list.

Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli (2nd wicket) – 204 runs in 110 deliveries

Virat Kohli enjoys big runs and makes sure to form important partnerships along the road. It’s no surprise that he appears three times on the list of the top five biggest partnerships in IPL history. Kohli also enjoys scoring runs against his home state of Delhi. He teamed up with Chris Gayle in 2012, and the two annihilated the Delhi bowling attack. The Kohli-Gayle second-wicket stand was worth 204 runs and required only 110 balls.

As Gayle stormed to 128* off 62 balls, Kohli was equally effective, scoring 73 off 53 deliveries. The two guided RCB to a massive 215/1 before Delhi were reduced to 194/9. Even after all these years, this is still one of the best pairings in the IPL.

189 runs in 98 balls by Naman Ojha and David Warner (1st wicket)

David Warner was a member of the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) before captaining Sunrisers Hyderabad to victory. In Match 55 of the IPL 2012 against the Deccan Chargers, he put up 189 runs for the second wicket with Naman Ojha. The Chargers would have been pleased with their 187/4 innings if they had batted first. They would have been even thrilled to watch Virender Sehwag go for 4. Warner and Ojha, on the other hand, had other plans. They put on an unbroken 98-ball stand and saw the Delhi team home safely. Warner finished with a score of 109*, while Ojha had the ideal hand, scoring 64*.
